How and Why to Recruit
by Becky Dean, Usborne Director
Before you start to recruit you need to see why
you should recruit. Many people are hesitant to
recruit because somehow they look at it as being
pushy or selfish. But it is just the opposite!! If
you are not recruiting, not letting people know
about this business opportunity that could be
theirs, then you may be keeping your friends, your
hostesses, the people you meet: from the job they
always wished they could find, a way for them to
stay home with their kids, a way for them to make an
extra $100 a week, a way for them to be able to
become debt-free and fulfill their dreams and more!
Why Should You
Recruit?
To give yourself:
-
A pay raise
with the extra override you make on your own
sales!
-
Fabulous
trips for two for FREE!! :)
-
A chance to
have wonderful and sincere friendships.
-
An
opportunity to become debt-free!
-
A long-term
goal to retire and live off the interest of
your earnings!
To give others:
-
An extra $100
a week!
-
An
opportunity to raise their own children.
-
A chance to
get out once-in-awhile if they are a
stay-at-home mom.
-
An
opportunity to earn fabulous vacations!
-
Self-esteem
-
Computer
skills
-
Recognition
-
New friends
-
Personal
growth
-
Great books
for their personal library
-
A lifetime
discount on the greatest educational books
out there! :)
-
The chance to
take a hold of the opportunity so they, too,
can be debt-free and retire to live off the
interest of their earnings!
You need to look at
recruiting as doing others a favor. That is the way
I recruit. What other job can you go out and work
one night and come home with on average $75-$100 a
night - legally! ;) If they don't want to
take advantage of the opportunity that is fine but
give them the choice - don't decide for them
- just ask! We have the awesome privilege of helping
others build a business where they can be totally
debt-free. So always, always, do your
recruiting talk at home shows and booths. It could
change someone's life!!
And as we help others
build their own business, we in turn are building
our own. That is what multi-level marketing is. The
company pays us to find and train others - that is
how they get the word out about their product w/o
paying for advertising - that is how the company
grows! We are their advertisers. It is also
important to realize that when you recruit someone,
it is the company who is paying you. The Home
Office pays you an override % according to what your
recruits (and yourself) have sold but it never is
deducted from your recruit's profits - their profits
are all their own. You don't get paid for just
signing people up - you have to help them build
their business, which in turn grows yours. These are
some important distinctions to realize if you are a
bit hesitant about recruiting.
Now there are
different style of recruiting/advertising that
people have and you just need to find what works
best for you. Some people are very good at talking
to everyone they meet and recruiting several people
they have "just met." They do the "3-foot" rule
where you strike a conversation up with anyone
within 3-feet of you and share about your business.
Now if you are like
me who does not talk to anyone when I am at the
grocery store and I hardly even get out of the house
except for my Usborne parties/events that would
present a problem if that were the only way to
recruit. :) But thankfully there are other ways. I
may not talk to everyone I meet about the business
BUT... if someone stops at my booth or is at a party
they will always hear or see something about
recruiting so I do recruit many people from booth
events and parties. We also recruit many people from
our web site and give many leads away - the key to
recruiting on the web is follow up on leads promptly
and to start an email loop of prospective recruits.
Not everyone will sign up right away but after a few
months they will come back to you if you have built
a good relationship via phone/email with them. It is
important to not get "too desperate" when you are
recruiting. It is like fishing: just give them a
little info. and back off, give them a little info.
and back off - don't start "reeling in like crazy"
or you will lose your recruit just like you would
lose your fish - let them get hooked first. :) Let
the decision be theirs and listen to what their
needs are and become relatable to them so they can
feel they can do this, too.
The 4-Step Process of Recruiting
The first step is to LISTEN!!
at your parties, booths, conversations to what
people's needs are. I have recruited several people
simply because they said to me/or I overheard them
saying they were looking for a job or hated their
current job or were struggling with putting their
children into daycare or were wondering what to do
after they had their baby or stayed home w/their
kids but needed some adult conversation or loved the
books but couldn't afford to buy all they wanted or
were starting to homeschool or were homeschooling
now or they were a teacher, etc...
The second step is to IDENTIFY!!
with that person and/or their situation as much as
possible. If they have children make sure you
mention you have kids, too. Find something to
identify yourself with them so you have more
credibility with them. So that you seem like a mom
just like them and that if you can do this then
maybe they can too. If they can identify with you
then they can see themselves doing what you are
doing. If you are some expert
salesperson/businesswomen then they will never feel
like they are capable enough to do this business. So
be relatable and identify with people at your
parties/booths.
The third step is to SHARE!!
why we have the perfect solution to all of those
situations!! We have the perfect business for people
to make an extra $100 a week or just an extra $100 a
month or to have a home-based career or for moms to
be able to raise their own children while still
contributing to the family budget or for moms to get
out to meet new friends or to get a lifetime
discount on great books or a great program to earn
books free or a way to have a lifetime discount,
etc... The possibilities are endless! Drop several
recruiting seeds at your parties/booths :)
The fourth step is to ASK!!
if they would like to start their own home business
with Usborne Books. Or, ASK if they have ever
thought about doing something like this. You can
listen, identify and share about the
opportunity/books all you want but you still need to
ASK if they would be interested - if they ever
thought about doing something like this - just give
it a 12 week try and earn lots of free books -
etc... I am normally a very quiet person when out
shopping and don't get a lot of recruits that way
but watch out if you come to one of my booths or
parties! ;) I have learned that I need to ask people
to get results so when I am in my "job" setting I am
always looking at how I can recruit people. Look at
the recruiting example below again and see how I
listened even within email, identified with her
(just a note on that - I NEVER say I am a
homeschooler unless they first say they are as some
people are very opinionated against homeschoolers),
shared how it would benefit their situation
and ASKED. To have recruiting results, make sure
you take the final step and ASK! :)
Actual Recruiting
Example
Here is an actual example of how I recruited
someone recently when they just requested a catalog
- by listening to where they were coming from,
relating to them, and just giving a little info. w/o
being pushy and asking:
The exact email I
received:
> Hello!
>
> Is it possible to order a catalog of all the
Usborne books? I know that several of the ladies in
my homeschool group have been interested in these
books. I myself would like to purchase some. I am
also hoping to have grandparents purchase some for
Christmas and birthdays. How can I get my hands on a
tactile copy of a catalog? I am willing to pay for
one.
>
> Thanks,
Our successful
recruiting response:
..."Have you ever thought about selling these books
yourself?? We also homeschool so that is the reason
why we started - to get our curriculum at a
discount. ;) There are no monthly minimums so it is
a very flexible opportunity. It is a great way to
earn extra money, earn free books and have a
lifetime discount. Just let us know and we will
include the consultant info. with your catalog. :)
